...So exactly what IS in that bag of "pet" food??
In the October, 2001 issue of Conscious Choice, Deborah Straw, author of Why is Cancer Killing Our Pets?, states, "Until quite recently,
many of us have been content with or ignorant about feeding our dogs and cats commercial foods, believing that pet food companies know
best. However, a few things have shifted our perceptions, including rising disease rates and holistic health, or investigative books on the
subject of animal nutrition. One of the most radical and convincing is Ann Martin's book,
Food Pets Die For. In preparation for writing this
book, Martin spent seven years investigating the commercial pet food industry, and what she uncovered isn't pretty.

Perhaps the most compelling reason, morally, not to feed your dog or cat commercial pet foods is that there are
rendered, euthanized
pets in much of this food.
These pets have been mixed with other materials, including some condemned for human foods: "rotten meat
from supermarket shelves, restaurant grease,...4-D (Dead, diseased, dying and disabled) animals, road kill."
The Minister of Agriculture of Quebec told Martin that, indeed dead animals are cooked with viscera, bones and fats, and the fur is not
removed. Anything that is unfit for human consumption such as blood, udders, lungs, ligaments, intestines, etc., etc, is found in
commercial feed, labeled as "by-products", "meat and bone meal", or other similar names. In both the United States and Canada, this
rendering (melting down) of pets is not illegal. Martin points to an article originally published in the San Francisco Chronicle in which an
employee and ex-employee of a rendering plant
admitted that their company rendered approximately 250,000 to 500,000 pounds of
animals
, scraps, and more, including "somewhere between 10,000 to 30,000 pounds of dogs and cats a day."

That's enough to turn our stomachs, isn't it?
Martin also discovered that some pets are euthanized with sodium pentobarbital and then
rendered. This does not break down the poison, yet this rendered material goes into commercial pet food and into feed for cows, pigs,
horses, lamb and goat―
many of which we go on to consume. (It's safest to purchase free-range, hormone & antibiotic-free meats from
discerning farmers, found through your natural health food market.)
Straw goes on further stating, "Wendell O. Belfield, DVM, author of How to Have a Healthier Dog and The Very Healthy Cat Book
(both written with Martin Zucker), was a veterinary meat inspector for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, in the state of California, for seven
years. In this job, he saw terrible things
including the use of dead pets with sodium pentobarbital in their bodies. In the finished rendered
product, fat stabilizers are introduced to prevent rancidity.
The preservatives, BHA and BHT are "both known to cause liver and
kidney dysfunction."
Some European countries prohibit their use or importation. Ethoxyquin (EQ) is "suspected of being a cancer-causing
agent." Many semi-moist dog foods contain
propylene glycol, a cousin of * antifreeze *  that "causes the destruction of red blood cells."
"Any veterinary nutritionist, government health official, or scientist who says
feeding the aforementioned chemicals daily to our pets will not have a
deleterious effect on them is
living in a fool's paradise."
                                                                                  Dr. Wendell O. Belfield, DVM
Fungal toxins (aflatoxin; mycotoxin: toxic substances produced by mold) can infect pet food while being manufactured at the plant,
usually derived from the raw material itself. This is due to the improper drying and storage of the crops, creating mold growth, as well as
mold proliferation. (Keep in mind, foods unfit for human consumption are used in pet foods.) These same toxins are found in many of the
foods we humans consume from bags, boxes and cans, to a lesser degree.
Fungal toxins cause animals to vomit, refrain from
eating and cause diarrhea. The more dangerous forms of mycotoxins go on to cause liver dysfunction/damage, weight loss,
lameness and even death in our animals.
Add to that the additives in processed "pet" food, and you've got a major war going on inside
your pet's system! Some of the
additives allowed in processed pet foods are:

Anti-caking Agents • Anti-microbial Agents • Anti-oxidants • Coloring Agents • Curing Agents • Drying Agents • Emulsifiers • Firming
Agents • Flavor Enhancers • Flavoring Agents • Flour-Treating Agents • Formulation Aids • Humectants • Leavening Agents • Lubricants •
Non-nutritive Sweeteners • Oxidizing/Reducing Agents • pH Control Agents • Processing Aids • Sequestrants • Solvents/Vehicles •
Stabilizers/Thickeners • Surface Active Agents • Surface-Finishing Agents • Synergists • Texturizers
So what should you feed your pet?
In The Cure For All Diseases by Dr. Hulda Clark, Ph.D., N.D., Clark firmly
believes in a cooked, homemade diet for our pets, as do Martin and I. The whole
concept of eating a monolithic diet the rest of
my life is repulsive. Would you like to
eat crackers
every meal for an entire lifetime? And have you ever noticed that
certain "smell" emitted from that bag of "pet" food you just opened? Too often, it's
noxious restaurant grease, rendered animal fat, and other inferior oils entirely too
rancid for our companions' systems. It's no wonder our animals are getting cancer
and degenerative diseases with increased frequency; their livers are no longer
capable of detoxifying the pollutants in their food, day in and day out. We feed them
a completely unnatural diet - extremely processed & moldy - comprised of "covering
up" the very things they're allergic to by adding flavors they like.
Our animals
would never eat that way in the wild; they're simply not genetically -
designed to do it.
What a shame it is marketers have brainwashed us - our
animals' only caretakers - into thinking we are doing the right thing by feeding this
way; a supposed, "100% Complete and Scientifically-Balanced Diet". As
Dr. Randy L. Wysong, DVM, states, "Anyone can make claims." Our
companions deserve to be brought back to a natural state, void of our "modern"
diseases
* we've * created for them!

In Ann Martin's latest book,
Protect Your Pet - More Shocking Facts, Martin
corresponded with dozens of veterinarians (many of them specialists), nutritionists,
pathologists and others.
There is harmful bacteria and parasites in raw meat,
poultry and fish.
Martin states, "Pets suffer the effects of Salmonella, E. coli,
Campylobacter and Listeria
from various sources."

In addition, some pets fed raw meat experience vomiting, diarrhea, pancreatitis,
bone shards and even
"death at an early age". Common sense will tell you
this is *NOT* a sign of purging or detoxification, like others will persuade
you to believe. Vomiting and diarrhea is the animal's attempt - just like it is
the human body's attempt - to eliminate a foreign invader, such as a
parasite or pathogenic bacteria.
With my spoiled-rotten gremlins...
I cook organic for them daily!

- Support Your Local Animal Rescue -
.:: Did you know?  Besides harmful bacteria, the parasites found in raw or undercooked meat, ingested by the animal, can then
be passed onto its human companion, once infected.
85% to 90% of Americans are (unsuspectingly) harboring these
"non-rent-paying-visitors"
from various, everyday sources (aside from their pet), causing everything from fatigue, headaches/migraines,
allergies, dark circles, vision problems, insomnia and digestive disturbances/bloating, to
"mysterious" diseases such as * diabetes,
cancer and AIDS. *
The list goes on and on...America is literally an "epidemic in disguise", and we are not "above" inhabiting these
creatures, like we are so blindly led to believe. Diarrhea does NOT have to accompany a parasitic infection, nor do these microorganisms
reveal themselves in many
traditional testing procedures; hence, the "mystery" which baffles many medical doctors today. Don't buy into
the fear our traditional medical establishment and media puts forth, with regard to disease. I, as well as family members, have personally
beat "mysterious" diseases, as well as two, "incurable" ones. (
Conditions, such as cerebral palsy, mental retardation, etc., are
unfortunately, irreversible.)
*** DIS-EASE DOES NOT HAVE TO EXIST. Prevention, diet and
educating oneself is the key! ***
Even though Martin admits to respecting the work of Dr. Ian Billinghurst, B.V.Sc., an Australian veterinarian who created the
Bones And Raw Food diet (aka, BARF), she states,
"The problems with the raw meat diet far outweigh the advantages.
I understand that those who feed the raw meat diet to their pets believe they're making the best possible choices they can for their pets."
Dr. Clark, Martin and I, through our extensive research and knowledge, will never adhere to this kind of diet for our companions, nor will
many veterinarians. It simply is an unsafe diet, as it is
unbalanced and subjects the animal to potentially life-threatening microorganisms. In
addition, Dr. Lisa Newman, N.D., with a Ph.D. in holistic nutrition, has seen "
an increase of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), digestive
problems and immuno-related weaknesses in animals fed a raw diet
on a daily basis." Individuals who experience IBS symptoms
have one too many parasites thriving in their systems, with an imbalance of antagonistic bacteria and yeast, among other things. (There is
no "mystery", and drugs are not the answer.)
Animals are no different. Raw meat, poultry and fish carry entirely too many foreign
invaders.
Our domesticated animals simply do not have the same digestive enzymes and capabilities as those in the wild.
Symptoms can take as long as two to 10 days before showing up - creating confusion for the caretaker - and many times the pet won't
even show true illness until just days prior to death, only after the bacteria and/or parasite has done its (long-term) damage. (*For the safety
of both you and your companion(s), always wash hands well and frequently when handling raw meats, fish and poultry - prior to cooking -
and avoid cross-contamination with serving platters, utensils and cutting boards*)

With regard to diet, many vets Martin interviewed recommend "raw fruits, vegetables and (cooked) grains, and any meat lightly cooked."
Organic produce is best.+ I personally add and rotate vitamins, supplements, herbs and probiotics with F.O.S. (enteric-coated), as
well as virgin, organic, cold-pressed,
healthy oils (used sparingly), such as flax/borage, almond, olive and coconut oils. With the exception
of the latter two, keep oils refrigerated to prohibit rancidity, and discard after 3-4 months, for yourself as well. I
avoid corn products, soy
and wheat
, the three primary foods canines are allergic to, as well as yeast products (always read labels) to keep their systems in
balance. (We would be well-advised to take a cue from our companions and apply this avoidance to our
*own* diets...) I cook their meats
well (I never, ever "nuke" foods) to eliminate the parasites and pathogenic bacteria for my little monsters.

Our companions should be fed
two small meals a day, as opposed to one large one. Encouraging your pet to eat a lot at one meal
places an undue amount of pressure in the stomach, causing irritation of the esophagus by stomach acid. Prolonged feeding habits of this
nature inevitably end up in disease. As well, humans should be consuming five to six
small meals per day, not three large ones, for the very
same reason.

Although
Dr. Pitcairn, DVM, Ph.D., condones feeding raw meat, which I do not, I do however recommend his book,
Dr. Pitcairn's Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs & Cats (as well as Martin's and anything by Dr. Hulda Clark), as it is chock-full
of information regarding proper feeding procedures (I substitute cooking my meats for the raw meat entries), as well as vitamins and
supplements to feed.
Homemade diets, however, are difficult to formulate accurately. To prevent harm to your companion, please
seek the advice of a certified, experienced, veterinary
nutritionist before attempting this on your own. (Keep in mind, most veterinarians have
little or no training in nutrition.) As well, classes are effective for common knowledge taught by "nutrition specialists" or "nutrition
consultants". However, please be aware these "consultants" have no certification.
Read your books, take your classes, but do NOT rely
solely on these practices and information.
Inform yourself so you are better equipped to direct knowledgeable questions to your
veterinary nutritionist. He or she will then determine which recipes are acceptable for the specific needs of your pet. Not only must the
recipes be *balanced and complete* - which differ greatly from what is required for humans - but they must be fed in a balanced
rotation
schedule
, which can only be truly determined by the testing performed by your veterinary nutritionist.
"WE have domesticated the animal; therefore, more than ever,
we have a responsibility to meet our animals' health and
nutritional needs."

Conquering Candida
My vet says I have a wonderful disposition & temperament, despite what happened to me.
My new momma is spoiling me rotten and feeding me healthy, *REAL FOOD*, so I become
big and strong.  Watch me grow!
+ Some "studies" (I only give "studies" so much weight and credibility; who paid for it?) have suggested that produce that's been sprayed
with pesticides and preservatives are safer than organic. This couldn't be further from the truth
! While it is true organic harbors more bacteria,
by washing it with a superior,
natural product such as Bi-O-Kleen's, "Produce Wash" with grapefruit seed extract, or a hydrogen peroxide
cleanse you can easily make at home, you will eradicate bacteria. Washing
* will not * remove the harsh pesticides that have absorbed
into the produce itself, and pesticides cause cancer.
(Pesticides are found in every cancer-related death. EVERY one.) Remember - a
strong immune system is resistant to most harmful microorganisms;
it is weak against chemicals and processed foods, however.

.:: Did you know? The majority of so-called, "fresh" and "organic" produce found at your local grocery store (as compared to
ethical, health food markets), have been
frozen prior by local farmers. And the truly "fresh" are typically purchased from outside countries,
such as Mexico, where *
human waste* is used as fertilizer. This is why it's imperative to thoroughly clean and rinse your produce
prior to consuming.

Detoxifying your own body
(animal companions can be included) of these parasites, harmful bacteria and mold found on food, is essential
in eradicating these microorganisms, which are
directly responsible for disease (cancer; HIV, etc). Find natural, internal cleansing
products available through your naturopathic doctor, medical doctor (who integrates alternative therapies), nutritionist and/or local health food
market.
A cleanse twice a year is one of the best insurance policies out there; I don't know about you, but I fully intend to be outside,
active and enjoying life in my 80's, refuting a life confined to a home.
"YOU CAN'T PUT A PRICE TAG ON YOUR HEALTH!"
Avoiding meat (animals), fish and fowl (amphibians & reptiles)
constitutes "vegetarianism". I was a vegetarian 20 years ago, but am
no longer (like many who must eventually revert back for health
reasons.) However, I continue to omit the eating of animals from my
own diet. This is a conscious choice I make for myself, and I do not
force my opinion on others with regard to this. What works for one,
does not necessarily work for another; live and let live. If there were no
health issues to contend with, I would hope we all would be strict
vegetarians. But the fact remains there is, as our health is directly
governed and affected by what we choose, or don't choose, to put into
our bodies. Based upon my educational studies, it is imperative
children consume meat for growth and development of the brain, and I
will continue to condone this statement, despite my own personal diet
choices.
However...American adults consume entirely too large a
portion of meat in their daily diets. (We need to seek
balance.)
While it is true Argentineans consume as much, if not more meat in
their diets than Americans,
cancers and colon cancer are virtually
non-existent for them. Why? Because they consume healthy, *whole
foods* along with (all) their protein, unlike Americans who consume
the "convenience" of
moldy, processed, canned, boxed and
packaged, artificial foods,
setting the stage for disease.
Both canines and cats are carnivores; thus, needing more protein than their human counterparts, with less vegetable. Cats are true
carnivores, but some veterinary nutritionists recommend occasional feeding of fruits and vegetables... I am completely sympathetic to the
humane treatment of all animals. However, we cannot ignore the fact that dogs and cats are indeed carnivores. In the wild, they depend
upon other sources of animal protein; hence, they kill their prey.
They are not vegetarian by nature. THIS CANNOT BE DISPUTED.
Therefore, as ethical in nature as the dilemma is, we shouldn't be the ones to decide to alter their diet and harm their health to fit our own
beliefs - vegetarian, or otherwise.

For those of you who wish to continue serving
commercial foods, at least make the effort to avoid * canned * kibble, as anything
canned is full of mold and traces of botulism. As well, foods poisoned in aluminum cans cause Alzheimer's, according to
Dr. Hulda Clark, Dr. William Douglass Campbell II, M.D., and others. (Have we not seen a tremendous rise in this disease? Do we not
consume canned pop/soda and (moldy, invisible-to-the-eye), artificial foods lined in aluminum packaging more than ever? Think about it...)

If you choose to feed bagged kibble, feed as natural a product you can find from your local health food store or small, independent,
animal boutique. Again, read labels carefully, and ask for foods that have not been degraded by
heat. Be wary of pet foods found at
veterinary offices. If there is no certified, veterinary nutritionist on board, chances are you're purchasing harmful "food" for your animal(s).
Never assume just because it's in the office, it's safe and of high quality.

Although I have the utmost respect and admiration for veterinarian practitioners - as they are some of the most compassionate, humane
individuals - like medical doctors, they receive very little training in nutrition; thus, many times lacking the education to make a qualified
diagnosis of your pet's nutritional needs, sadly enough. This is where the nutritionist must step in.
Optimum health for both ourselves
and our animals relies the most heavily on sound nutrition.
This is the very subject that should be taught first and foremost in
schools, yet it is the thing that is most neglected. One could almost surmise, perhaps, there are entities out there wishing to keep us ill
and uninformed for a reason...
"Pet nutrition is a serious health matter not best addressed by
marketers, movie stars or other people with no true skill in
health and nutrition."
                                                          Dr. Randy L. Wysong, DVM
If considering to continue feeding kibble, augment a little raw vegetable (grated/diced well) and cooked meat, rotating these foods often.
Healthy table scraps are ideal, providing they are not scraps from junk food, high in fat or spiced heavily. (i.e.: frozen t.v. dinners,
canned or boxed foods, processed foods, including luncheon meats, etc. -
THINK NATURAL, *WHOLE* FOODS instead.) Grains and
legumes should be fed sparingly, since they're not a natural part of a carnivore's diet.
Occasionally, try soaking raw, organically-grown rolled
oats or barley flakes in milk that has been boiled and
cooled. Brown rice, millet, amaranth or quinoa (pronounced keen-wa) can be
augmented and rotated on occasion
, as well. Watch fresh corn, as it can pose problems in the gastrointestinal tract. Grasses are a
wonderful addition to the diet and can be sprouted and grown at home, or purchased conveniently from your local health food store.

For
snacks, a few raw seeds and nuts are always a favorite; however, they should be ground, mashed or soaked overnight (and rinsed well)
for proper digestion in the digestive tract. Otherwise, they are eaten virtually whole ("inhaled", as I like to call it), and the nutrients are never
fully utilized. Help to ensure they are fresh and mold-free by keeping them refrigerated for both you and your pets... My friend, who's a
weight trainer, used to feed his dog
sports bars, as he once believed they were "healthy". I got a kick out of that! They are nothing but
artificial, processed junk, laden with chemicals & solvents (especially benzene) and mold, invisible to the eye.
Again, read
labels, and know this is
powerful marketing at its best! Instead, provide very small amounts of fresh, raw fruit as their daily treat -
pinched, grated and/or diced well (no grapes). My little monsters go absolutely crazy for a few tablespoons of my homemade juicing or
smoothies made with rice/nut milk (
NEVER soy++ - see imperative information at bottom of this section), and it's easy on their digestive
tracts. On occasion, they get a special treat made with whole cream, like my ice cream, sweetened with the herb,
Stevia.

Unless you're fortunate enough to get your
dairy fresh from a farm, successfully eradicating the harmful bacteria in it for your
companion AND YOU can be accomplished by boiling it a full minute.
"Lactose intolerance" then becomes "tolerable" or even
non-existent. I have found my companions no longer get "the gurgles" - that rumbling of bacteria in their digestive tracts - so long as I boil
the dairy. Very small amounts of
feta (goat cheese) has been well-suited for them, however, without boiling. I'm not big on commercial
yogurt (as much as I absolutely love the taste) for my companions, or myself. There is such a small percentage of beneficial bacteria in it
(the majority of the flora is dead by the time it reaches the dairy case), that it hardly seems worth feeding and encouraging the harmful
bacteria our own systems already contain. Even "healthy" or "natural" yogurt can be laden with junk sugars, pathogenic bacteria and
benzene. (It's simply been sitting too long.) Once again,
fresh, unsweetened yogurt, or kifir, with beneficial probiotic cultures
is the way to go, if you can obtain it from a farm, or make fresh yourself (it's easy).
If you are one who enjoys giving your pooches baked goods, I highly recommend
Bow Wow Gourmet Cookie Factory (see links page). Joyce and her crew are ethical and very
cautious about the ingredients used, and they never use bacon fat which, unfortunately,
manufacturers don't have to disclose. They are made
fresh to order and shipped overnight, evading
the grocer's shelf where mold grows invisible to the eye. In addition, they are more than happy to
customize your order, eliminating/alternating ingredients your companion may have an adversity to.
NATURAL = FRESH, WHOLE FOODS AS NATURE INTENDED
Powerful marketing terms such as "natural", "raw", "organic", "balanced", "veterinarian recommended" and "100% complete
and balanced" are
not necessarily a true reflection of what's actually in the product. Educate yourself, read labels and use common
sense.

I personally consume a
high-protein diet (imperative in staving off pathogenic microorganisms which feed/cause cancer, diabetes, among
other diseases), and 90% of my own diet, as well as that of my animal companions, contains foods whereby I DON'T have to read labels:
Plentiful, fresh and 100% organic, raw fruits & vegetables, nuts, seeds, whole grains (used sparingly - "gluten is glue"), bird, fish,
seafood, beneficial oils and dairy. Period. It just can't get any simpler than that!
You don't have to make diet a big deal, if you simply
follow the rules of nature. (Note: Carbs - especially simple carbs - muddle one's thinking, produce tiredness and/or fatigue, and heavy
consumption almost inevitably leads to disease (think Diabetes/Hypoglycemia; Cancer; AIDS; Candida; Schizophrenia,...
Seek balance,
with a 50% consumption of raw fruits & vegetables in the diet (go easy on the former) to neutralize the body,
eating low amounts of carbs
and high protein. A wealthy consumption of carbs is acceptable when heavily exerting, such in the case of abundant exercise, where the
body naturally converts the sugars to energy. To determine your individual nutritional needs -
imperative, especially if going the vegetarian or
vegan route - seek professional guidance and
implement a hair analysis every six to twelve months.)

Lastly, pets should be given
fresh, filtered water daily (preferably from a tap - not plastic bottles, as they contain harmful benzene), and
dishes should be ceramic (
onlyno metal or plastic!) and hand-washed & rinsed-well regularly, if not daily. (Do not wash in with your own.)

++ The Dangers of Soy
While it is true our canines are allergic to soy, many individuals are as well. Take caution - that "miracle food" may not be everything
it's cracked up to be...

Listening to that "inner guidance" - something I always recommend individuals do - I have
continually avoided soy, despite its high protein content. Nearly eighteen years ago, I was telling people
I thought it was both dangerous and toxic and nothing more than a hyped-up marketing ploy. I was
scoffed by nutritionists, individuals and health food gurus. "All those Asians can't be wrong, " and,
"Are you kidding? It's in all the health food stores for a reason..." were responses I received. While
it is true Asians consume soy almost daily, their soy not only differs from ours in the U.S., but they
also
consume an exceptionally healthy diet (unlike ours), where "toxic" ingredients
have a much less detrimental effect on their health.

In 2000 and 2001, I saw the first signs of questioning soy and its so-called, "health benefits" on the covers of a couple major, natural health
magazines. Then came news from both
Dr. William Douglass Campbell II, M.D., and Dr. Jonathan V. Wright, M.D.. Stated were these
alarming facts in Dr. Wright's,
Nutrition & Healing newsletter:

An infant fed soy formula is getting the ESTROGENIC (hormonal) EQUIVALENT OF FIVE BIRTH CONTROL PILLS PER DAY!

Until the 1930's, the only place in the USA where you could find soybeans was at your local hardware store - in your paint
and varnish.

Recent research ties two or more servings a week of tofu with "accelerated brain aging."

Two of the FDA's own experts warn that the safety concerns regarding soy are still "largely unanswered."

Even after rigorous chemical processing, soy contains substances that are now being linked to breast cancer, serious
nutritional deficiencies and even accelerated brain aging
(think Alzheimer's and dementia!) Although I'm not one convinced easily
of "studies" as mentioned previously, it has been proven in laboratory tests, that soybeans have been
shown to cause everything from
cancer to birth defects
, according to Dr. Wright. You can decide for yourself, with regard to this study. However, if I were a parent, I'd
probably want to steer clear of soy, as the big question is,
'Does it inhibit growth in children?'...

"The selling of soy as a substitute for animal fat and animal protein, because of its
higher profit margin, is a crime against the American people, especially children,
who need animal fat for neurological and brain development and animal protein for
normal growth...Soy is an equal-opportunity oppressor of the health and well-being
of all Americans."

Dr. William Douglass Campbell II, M.D.

Soybeans aren't safe to eat when picked fresh; they're actually *toxic*. In order to remove these harmful toxins, manufacturers must use
harsh chemical processing. The beans are then subjected to acid baths and extreme heat. They're spray-dried to produce a high-protein
powder. Proceeding next, artificial flavorings such as MSG, preservatives, sweeteners, emulsifiers and synthetic nutrients are added, all in
the name of improving taste and flavor.

"Processed soy powder also contains residual
phytic acid; a substance experts know blocks the absorption of calcium, magnesium, zinc
and other essential minerals in the intestinal tract, " states Dr. Wright. This equates to:
Post-menopausal women who eat soy may be at
greater risk for osteoporosis.

You've probably read that soy contains beneficial substances called, isoflavones. Beneficial to menopausal women, or so previously
thought, these very isoflavones can wreak havoc on your hormonal system. One hundred grams of soy protein daily - the recommended
amount by a national soy organization -
"provides the estrogenic equivalent of taking the birth control pill."
"With the (birth control) pill being responsible for causing so many detrimental,
adverse effects for so many women, including the proliferation of life-threatening
Candida yeast, why do we want to continue to add insult to injury?"
                                                                                                  Catriana, L.C.

Conquering Candida

(with regard to soy)
Dr. William Douglass Campbell II, M.D., further supports the aforementioned and states in his July 5, 2002 letter of
Real Health Daily Dose, "Excess soy intake causes deficiencies in a wide array of nutrients, one of which is calcium. The soy sellers
tacitly admit this, as they now "fortify" their soy drinks with a calcium salt. Unfortified soy "milk" contains about 10 milligrams of calcium
per serving, which is, for all practical purposes, none. So don't fall for the false labeling on the soy carton that claims the product has an
amount of calcium equivalent to cow's milk. It may be true as far as actual quantities are concerned, but the calcium added, called
tricalcium phosphate, cannot be effectively absorbed by the body."

Throwing in calcium salt will not solve the problem, since "soy milk is also deficient in magnesium, zinc and iron." Your best source of
these essential nutrients is natural, unpasteurized, unhomogenized milk of the cow. If you're not getting it fresh from a farm, avoid it at all
costs, however. I have personally omitted milk from my own diet the past 18 years, but this is a health choice you need to decide for
yourself. Always seek a certified, experienced nutritionist or specialist for nutritional guidance.

Dr. Hulda Clark is also a big opposer, when it comes to soy.  She states from her book, The Cure for HIV and AIDS,

"We have been indoctrinated that soybeans would be a near-perfect food, since they
have most of the amino acids of meat. Yet they taste bad, as any child knows.
Things taste bad for a reason―especially to a child. The
liver knows and the
hypothalamus knows when food should not be eaten. Now we know why soybeans
should not be eaten: they are full of phloridzin and apiol. But commerce (and
academic nutritionists) found ways to force us all, even cattle, to eat them. So soy
products have penetrated the food market deeply. A way may be found to breed soy
plants without these phenolics, but meanwhile we should not be deterred from using
our basic common sense.
We should not eat food that tastes bad."

Dr. Hulda Regehr Clark, Ph.D., N.D.

And lastly, in 2004, one of the nation's top-leading nutritional authorities, Ann Louise Gittleman, Ph.D., C.N.S., has admitted she's
changed her position with regard to soy and has recently revised her
New York Times best-selling book, Before the Change.
"I believe that soy has been over-promoted as a cure for all that ails us
and that many Americans have been overdosing on soy - with potentially
toxic results."
                                                             Ann Louise Gittleman, Ph.D., C.N.S.
(Let Ann Loise be the voice and be the example for the many who would like to reverse their opinions of this dangerous, toxic product they
call, soy―or any other detrimental health issue at hand.)
Soy is found in many of our animals' commercial foods, and yet, it is the very food our canines are allergic to. Why? Because it's
cheap and easy to obtain
. If you are not feeding a natural diet to your companions, I urge you to seek a pet food that is void of soy. Nearly
every commercial pet food found in ethical, natural, health food stores is free of soy, and many are
free of wheat, corn and yeast (other
common offenders). Please be conscientious, and read labels carefully
to ensure the safety for both you and your companions' health.

About In Defense of Animals (IDA)
When I initially received IDA's literature many years ago, I was impressed by their candidness - not fluff. I feel
very strongly about IDA, and their position with regard to animal rights; thus, I elected to move my support over
to them.
Our Tax Dollars At Work...
The photo's that accompanied their pamphlet left me mortified and in shock, then completely outraged. I bawled my eyes out profusely
upon viewing a research photo of an innocent kitty, bolts screwed into the top of her head. How could anyone do such a morbid thing to
such a defenseless creature?! Then there is the horrendous experimentation going on at the
University of Colorado in Boulder (kudos to
Boulder's Rita Anderson heading the Committee for Research Accountability) and the insidious acts of chimpanzee "research" continuing
at the
University of California, San Francisco. This so-called, "research" is so gruesome, I refuse to write about it here or publish
photo's (you can find out about it by visiting IDA's archives at www.idausa.org).
Nefarious acts like these are nothing more than pure,
adulterated madness, it's completely repulsive, and it needs to be stopped!
PLEASE OPEN YOUR EYES, OPEN YOUR HEARTS AND
* DO SOMETHING *
Help Vocalize These Monstrous Atrocities
* Corporate Cruelty!! *
IDA takes a strong stance against Proctor & Gamble. They warn that consumers need to be made aware that behind the
SPLASHY MARKETING of popular products like Head & Shoulders, Crest Toothpaste and
IAMS/Eukanuba "pet" food is a company
that continues to subject animals to untold suffering.
A recent investigation in 2003 conducted by
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals revealed how Proctor & Gamble's "pet" food subsidiary, IAMS/Eukanuba, subjected dogs to
cruel "pet" food research - where
"muscles were hacked out of the legs of living animals." IAMS claimed that no dogs or cats would
be killed in research.
This has brought forth worldwide shock by consumer advocates and animal rights activists alike, as P&G
continues to "blind, burn, mutilate and kill thousands of defenseless animals each year."
"IAMS are callous, calculating liars whose only concern is profit."

Dan Lyons, director of Uncaged Campaigns
In Defense of Animals' pro-active stance for animal rights has made great strides, from closing down disgustingly-dirty puppy mills where
thousands of starved, diseased and abused puppies were saved, to canceling a proposed slaughter of thousands of baby seals off the coast
of South Africa. They have also closed down what once was the largest experimental vivisection (surgical) center for chimpanzees in the
world, the heavily-criticized, Coulston Foundation. As a result,
IDA has created safe animal sanctuaries across the globe for these
terribly wounded, frightened animals
, including racing greyhounds, "research" beagles, dolphins, horses, and adult and baby
chimpanzees destined to be slaughtered by a thriving bushmeat trade.
"In Defense of Animals has set the standard for integrity and results in animal
advocacy.  In a world in which too many look away, IDA has been on the cutting
edge of front-line activism to end abuse and exploitation. No organization has done
more to uphold the principles of justice for our animal friends."

About Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF)
Animal Legal Defense Fund's animal rights mission is similar to that of IDA. The one thing that
impresses me most about this non-profit is their focus is not surrounded by telling you what not to
eat or how to think and act.
Instead, they focus on saving our animals that are subject to
untold suffering via poor, unsanitary living conditions, cruel and unnecessary
experimentation and devastating torture. This is what it's all about.
*** Woof & Company Supports Puppy Mills -
Just In It For The Buck! ***
In the ALDF news published January, 2004, animal rights advocates reacted with horror upon receiving the news of the new
Woof & Company retail stores, marketing puppy sales and supporting puppy mills.

Linda Povey, a partner in the consultancy that created the company, and a group composed of retail veterans from Gap and IKEA, have
initialized what they refer to as "lifestyle stores". I call it,
"Too flippin' greedy and can't be creative enough to market a store that does
not include the endangering of lives!"
These new stores can be found in the Boston-area malls and are sure to sprout up everywhere,
given time. (Another reason to loathe that "mainstream marketing".)

Featuring puppies from the Hunte Corporation (which one individual refers to as,
"the puppy pimp Hunte Corporation"), which also
exports dogs overseas, Hunte is the largest puppy broker in the U.S. The company has been linked to a number of negligent pet stores and
breeders such as
Petland Discount stores.

Doug Jones, a former Gap, Inc. Executive commented, "There is no clear market leader in the retail market for puppies." Jones said he
wants to creatively "merchandise and market" puppies.
Allow me to repeat that: Jones said he wants to creatively "merchandise
and market" puppies. WHAT IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE?!
Have we become a society so hell-bent on making a buck, that we forgo our
morals and values? Do we devalue the human or animal life to such an extent that we lose all consciousness while in the stream of making
money? Do we feel the need to continue to sit in front of our t.v.'s, allowing marketers to brainwash us into thinking this kind of behavior is
acceptable?? Well, it's not. It's not only immoral, but it's just plain WRONG. Stop for a minute and think about what's going on here...

MORE PET STORES = MORE ABANDONED STRAYS

With anti-puppy mill organizations such as IDA, ALDF and The Fund for Animals making such great strides in not only combating, but
closing down these diseased and disgustingly-dirty puppy mills in the past, they will now incur difficulty, once again, in shutting down these
ignorant and greedy establishments that have little regard for living, breathing creatures. Please support these non-profit organizations, both
vocally and financially.

ALDF states,
"Given the masses of dogs languishing in animal shelters across the nation who desperately need homes, and
given the cruel conditions endured by mothers and pups in commercial breeders' puppy mills, animal advocates consider
Woof & Company's pedigree puppy venture
morally unacceptable."

More News: As of 2004, some 30 students of Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine are determined to prevent the
killing of dogs, while officials as of yet, have refused their pleas. Diana Goodrich, a graduate student, asks the question on behalf of her
peers,

** "Why is it okay to kill them just because they are dogs?" **
"Dogs are domestic animals, and they're used to being fed. There's not many that
know how to hunt still (upon abandonment)...They just wait - and some of them wait
until they die - for their owners to come back."

We continue to support both IDA, ALDF and their mission...
We hope you will too.

Pet Theft Equates to Animal Torment
Pet theft is on the rise. Five million family pets are reported missing, annually. Millions are taken forcibly, or by deception through "Free to
Good Home" ads. Dogs and cats are sold to many different clients for many uses including classroom and veterinary dissection
+, to
"puppy mills" for breeding, for dog fighting rings (fighters or bait), as protective guard dogs, as fur for clothing and accessories, as meat for
human consumption, for cult rituals, or used as prey for exotic animals―usually harbored illegally. Please,
close guard your companion
and keep a leash on your pet while walking at all times!!

According to Dr. William Campbell Douglass II, M.D., the most consistent and highest-paying client is often the research industry―
both our *pharmaceutical* and *personal care companies*. Drug companies, incidentally, have also decided to increase their bottom line
and have paid researchers to invent some new diseases for man's best friend: "Canine Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome," (CCDS), is one
recently created. As a result, new
"doggie drugs", such as "Clomicalm" have emerged, "masking" symptoms, of course - treating only
and
never curing.
(Ref: "FDA approves pair of doggie treatments: Drugs fight aging problems; separation anxiety" Associated Press, 1/11/99)

+ The vast majority of veterinarians were opposed to animal dissection taught at universities and claimed it was of little educational value.
They cited the teachings as "unnecessary, disturbing and wasteful of lives", with most preferring the lessons taught via computer-generated
dissection.
"The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way
its animals are treated... I hold that, the more helpless a creature, the more
entitled it is to protection by man from the cruelty of man."
                                                                                              Mahatma Gandhi
"Vested interest, not sound scientific principle, have helped perpetuate the myth that animal research has been
indispensable to medical advances. The biomedical community's strident effort to discredit the millions of
Americans involved in the animal protection movement is a propaganda campaign worthy of the McCarthy era."
- Dr. Kenneth P. Stoller, M.D.
• •
"The public has been deceived into thinking that their concern regarding the welfare of animals is carefully
represented. Nothing could be further from the truth."
- Jan Polon Novic, public member
Army Institutional Review Committee
• •
"I am frankly shocked to find out that such experimental work is still being performed today."
- Dr. Marjorie Cramer, M.D. F.A.C.S.
• •
In Defense of Animals (IDA) writes, "Some pounds, shelters and humane societies may sell "surplus"
dogs and cats to Class B dealers and/or
research facilities - a practice commonly called "pound seizure".
Whether or not a state-wide ban on Pound Seizure exists, some pounds or shelters practice pound seizure
illegally. There are known cases of family dogs and cats being picked up as "strays", being "laundered"
through the pound, shelter or humane society system (by withholding them from view or taking them to an
out-of-town facility to fulfill the required five-day holding period), and later sold to a dealer or research facility
to become tortured and mutilated.
Having a pound, shelter or humane society that practices pound
seizure in your area means that every pet is worth money and increases the chances of pet theft
occurring in your community."
- Keep An Eye On Your Companions AT ALL TIMES!! -
choose cruelty-free products
As a former salon owner / professional hair designer of 20 years, I have always condoned products that refrain from testing on animals.
There is simply
NO NEED for these cruel, outdated acts! Despite my access to warehouses involving deep discounts, I personally use
shampoos formulated for our
animal companions. Yes, that's right - I use dog shampoo. Not any old dog shampoo, mind you. I specifically
use all-natural products I find at my favorite doggie boutiques, including
Lewis & Bark. No dangerous chemicals. No perfumes. No dyes.
Nothing but pure, natural ingredients. (READ LABELS - READ LABELS - READ LABELS!!) These shampoos are
gentle for baby (I'll
spare you the dangers of so-called, "baby shampoo" tainted with novocaine)
, and I also use them as a shower / shaving gel. I
alternate these shampoos with quality, non-chemical products I find at my local health food market (which are few, unfortunately). I steer
clear of anything that ends in "eth", or has the derivative of "prop" or "para", and have yet to find a (natural) company who tests on animals
or doesn't recycle...
